Is Alcohol Dangerous for Dogs and Cats?
By the VetVerdict team · Last updated October 18, 2026 · General information, not veterinary advice
Dogs
ToxicEmergencyAlcohol affects dogs much like people, but at far lower doses — it can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar, blood pressure, and body temperature, and can be fatal.
Cats
ToxicEmergencyCats are extremely sensitive to alcohol; even small amounts of spilled drinks can cause serious poisoning.
Small bodies, big effects
Pets are much smaller than people and have no tolerance for ethanol, so an amount that would barely register for an adult can cause a serious problem. Alcohol depresses the nervous system, slows breathing and lowers body temperature and blood sugar.
Sources people overlook
It is not just spilled drinks. Alcohol is present in raw bread dough as it ferments, some desserts such as rum cake, certain cough syrups and mouthwashes, hand sanitizer and rotting fruit. Sweet cocktails and punch can be tempting to a curious pet, and letting a pet "have a sip" is never safe.
Signs to watch for
- Stumbling and poor coordination
- Unusual drowsiness
- Vomiting
- Slow or shallow breathing
- Low body temperature
- Tremors, collapse or coma in severe cases
Signs can begin quickly. Keep your pet warm while you get help.
What to do
Treat it as an emergency. Call your vet or poison control right away or go to an emergency clinic; do not wait to see if your pet sleeps it off.
Safer alternatives
At celebrations, keep drinks out of reach and offer a pet-safe treat so your animal feels included.
Frequently asked questions
Is a sip of beer okay for a dog?
No. Because of their size, even a small amount can cause problems.
Is hand sanitizer a risk?
Alcohol-based sanitizers are concentrated, so keep them out of reach and call your vet if your pet swallows some.
