Can Dogs and Cats Eat Cooked Bones?

Dogs
ToxicSeriousCooking makes bones brittle, and splinters can cause choking, cuts inside the mouth or throat, or a punctured or blocked intestine.
Cats
ToxicSeriousThe same splintering risk applies to cats — cooked bones of any kind should be kept away from them.
Why cooking makes bones dangerous
Cooking dries bones out and makes them brittle. Instead of cracking into chunks, a cooked chicken, turkey, rib or steak bone tends to break into sharp shards that can cut the mouth and throat or puncture the stomach and intestines.
Leftovers, holidays and big bones
The usual culprits are leftover rotisserie chicken carcasses, rib bones and holiday turkey. Smaller pets and cats are at higher risk from small bones, but even large bones can fracture a dog's teeth.
Raw bones bring a different set of concerns, including bacteria and tooth damage, and veterinarians are divided on them. Talk to your vet before offering any bone.
Signs to watch for
- Gagging, drooling or pawing at the mouth
- Vomiting
- Straining or not passing stool
- Blood in the stool
- Belly pain or a tense abdomen
- Lethargy and refusal to eat
Problems can appear hours or even days after the bone was swallowed.
What to do
If your pet swallowed bone fragments, call your vet. Do not try to remove a bone from the throat yourself or give home remedies; X-rays may be needed to see what happened.
Safer alternatives
Ask your vet about appropriately sized, vet-approved chews, or try frozen carrot sticks or sturdy rubber chew toys.
Frequently asked questions
Are raw bones safer than cooked ones?
Raw bones are not brittle in the same way, but they carry other risks such as bacteria and broken teeth. Many vets recommend against them; discuss it with yours.
My dog swallowed a small piece and seems fine. Should I still call?
Yes. Some fragments pass without trouble, but injuries can show up later, and your vet can advise what to watch for.
