Is Raw Bread Dough Dangerous for Dogs and Cats?

Dogs
ToxicEmergencyYeast dough continues to rise in the warm stomach, which can painfully distend it or cause a life-threatening twist, and the fermentation process produces alcohol as a byproduct.
Cats
ToxicEmergencyThe same dough-expansion and alcohol-production risk applies to cats.
A double problem inside the stomach
The warm, moist environment of the stomach keeps yeast dough rising. The expanding mass can stretch the stomach painfully and, in dogs, may contribute to life-threatening bloat. At the same time, fermentation produces ethanol, which is absorbed and can cause alcohol poisoning.
Counters, proofing bowls and sourdough starter
The usual story is a pet that grabs rising dough left on the counter. Pizza dough and sourdough starter count too, and dough made with raisins adds a kidney risk on top. Large, deep-chested dogs are at particular risk of bloat, but any pet can be affected.
Plain baked bread is a low-value treat but not a problem in small pieces — avoid versions with raisins, garlic, nuts or xylitol.
Signs to watch for
- A swollen or tight belly
- Unproductive retching
- Vomiting and drooling
- Weakness or stumbling
- Disorientation or collapse
Dough can expand quickly, so do not wait to see whether symptoms develop.
What to do
Treat it as an emergency. Call your vet or poison control, or head to an emergency clinic. Treatment depends on how much was eaten and may include inducing vomiting under supervision or surgery in severe cases.
Safer alternatives
Keep rising dough in a closed oven or a high cabinet, and offer a pet-safe biscuit when you bake.
Frequently asked questions
Is baked bread safe for dogs?
Plain baked bread in small amounts is generally okay, but it has little nutritional value and should not include raisins, garlic, nuts or xylitol.
How soon is it dangerous?
It can start to expand within hours of being eaten, so call right away rather than waiting.
