Is Coffee or Caffeine Toxic to Dogs and Cats?

Dogs
ToxicSeriousCaffeine is a stimulant that can cause restlessness, a racing heart, tremors, and in large amounts, seizures in dogs.
Cats
ToxicSeriousCats show the same stimulant toxicity from caffeine as dogs, and coffee grounds are especially concentrated.
A stimulant pets can't handle
Caffeine belongs to the same family of stimulants as the theobromine in chocolate. It speeds up the heart and the nervous system, and pets process it slowly, so the effects build and last.
Beyond the coffee cup
Used grounds in the trash or compost, whole beans, chocolate-covered espresso beans, tea bags, energy drinks, pre-workout powders and caffeine tablets are all more concentrated than a sip of brewed coffee. Decaf still contains some caffeine and is not a safe treat.
Signs to watch for
- Restlessness and panting
- Vomiting
- Rapid heartbeat
- Tremors
- Elevated body temperature
- Seizures in severe cases
A lick of brewed coffee is unlikely to cause harm, but a mouthful of grounds or a caffeine pill is a different story.
What to do
Call your vet or poison control and have the product packaging ready. The amount, your pet's weight and the form of caffeine all affect how serious it is.
Safer alternatives
Plain fresh water is the best drink to share with a pet.
Frequently asked questions
Is decaf coffee safe?
It still contains a small amount of caffeine and other compounds, so it is not recommended for pets.
What if my dog ate a tea bag?
Tea contains caffeine too. A single bag is less concentrated than coffee grounds, but call your vet if your pet swallowed one, especially a small dog or cat.
